Modou: Africa according to Ron Arad

The designer artist Ron Arad has created Modou, a collection of outdoor seatings for Moroso that pay tribute to ancient Senegalese craftsmanship.

“It is a place full of soul and emotions. Everything that comes from that land is vital and surrounded with infinite beauty.”

With these words, Patrizia Moroso, Art director of Moroso -one of the most appreciated international design companies- describes her love for Africa. A love that brought her, ten years ago, to create a collection of objects entirely handmade in collaboration with the Senegalese Atelier M’Afrique in Dakar. Recently the collection has been enriched thanks to the contribution of the famous Israeli designer Ron Arad, author of The Modou – collection of outdoor chairs – whose design and bright colors reflect the vitality of ancient Senegalese craftsmanship. “I called it Modou – says Ron Arad – like one of the artisans who made it, a blacksmith. Four chairs made by intertwining polyethylene thread traditionally used in Africa as fishing nets. A steel structure painted with an anti-rust treatment and hand-woven coloured polyethylene threads.”
