Hotel Castello di Reschio: royal comfort

Writer

Situated in the green hills of Val di Pierle in Umbria, on the Tuscan border, an old castle dating back to 1050 was transformed into an exclusive and charming Hotel.

Situated in Lisciano Niccone, Umbria, in the Perugia province, the Reschio Castle is today a fascinating “Maison du charme” immersed in the green hills of Val di Pierle. Built in 1050, the castle has a thousand-year history. Indeed, many are the families that have ruled the estate over the centuries, once part of the Papal state. The decision to turn the Castle into a Hotel was made in 1994 when the Bolza family purchased the estate and started a redevelopment process of the entire place, which covers an area of 1500 hectares and besides the castle also includes 50 farmhouses. The renovation works were carried out by Benedikt Bolza, son of the owner and mentioned by the magazine “Architectural Digest” among the 100 world’s best architects and designers. While respecting the original identity of the building, Bolza did not give up making a balanced use of more contemporary styles. A successful stylistic mix aimed, according to the words of the designer himself, at “giving the feeling of being in a place that you have known for years, but one that still knows how to surprise you”. A mission brilliantly accomplished, given the elegance characterising the 36 rooms available enriched by hand-made mosaics, old oil paintings and furnished with fine antique pieces.

The work, however, was not only done on the castle. Even the ten farmhouses were refurbished and transformed into luxury villas, different in style and mood. For those wanting to immerse into a medieval atmosphere in the castle’s tower a 5-floor suite is available with a roof garden on top and a bathtub where you can enjoy an amazing view of the Umbrian countryside. Several are the initiatives promoted by the hotel aimed at making its guests discover the nature, traditions, history and culture of the place: horse riding tours, search for the well-known black truffles – accompanied by a local guide – cooking lessons, cycling excursions. Finally, for those looking for relaxation, maybe after a full day spent discovering the treasures of the area, a Spa is also available located in the old, evocative cellars of the castle that offer a hammam, a sauna and two treatment rooms.
