Pompeii dialogues with the present

Writer

Pompeii’s remains dialogue with contemporary art in an exhibition at the Madre in Naples.

An exhibition that began with the intention of bringing together the ancient and the contemporary. A project stemming from the collaboration between the national park in Pompeii, one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, and MADRE, the contemporary art museum of the Campania Region. It is an exhibition project“Pompei @ Madre. Materia Archeologica” at the MADRE of Naples (Via Luigi Settembrini, 79) until April 30th, 2018. The exhibition’s itinerary is conceived and structured as a circular exploration with works, artefacts, documents and tools linked to the history of the various excavation campaigns at Pompeii. Starting from the discovery of the city submerged by lava, then from the old findings in Pompeii (mosaics, ancient sculptures, spectacular frescoes, etc.), up to contemporary works, from Andy Warhol to Mimmo Iodice, through Goshka Macuga, Rauschenberg, Nan Goldin and many others. Materia Archeologica then explores the possible, multiple relationships between archaeological heritage and artistic research and proposes a dialogue between more than 400 extraordinary Pompeii archaeological materials, nearly unknown and rarely exhibited, and more than 90 modern and contemporary works of art.
